
Chinese bass-baritone Chao Deng is rapidly emerging as one of the most compelling voices of his generation. A member of the ensemble at the Hamburg State Opera, he has already made notable appearances at many of the world’s leading opera houses, including the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, the Semperoper Dresden, Zurich Opera House, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, and the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing.
In the 2024/25 season, Chao Deng takes on two major new roles at the Hamburg State Opera, debuting as Figaro in Le nozze di Figaro and as Escamillo in Carmen. Further highlights of the season include engagements as Le Comte Capulet (Roméo et Juliette) at Zurich Opera House, Alidoro (La Cenerentola) at the Semperoper Dresden and the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, and Priamus (Les Troyens) at the Bavarian State Opera Munich. He also appears as Fasolt (Das Rheingold) with the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra at the Xinghai Concert Hall, and as Frank (Die Fledermaus) at the NCPA in Beijing.
Equally at home on the concert stage, Chao Deng has performed cornerstone works of the repertoire, including Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Choral Fantasy, Verdi’s Requiem, Elgar’s The Apostles, Dvořák’s Requiem and Stabat Mater, Mozart’s Coronation Mass, and Mendelssohn’s Paulus. His expressive depth, vocal presence, and musical intelligence have earned him growing recognition among both audiences and colleagues.In 2025, he was invited to join the China Tour of the Salzburg Festival and performed the “Mozart Opera Gala” at the Concert Hall of the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing, earning exceptional acclaim from the industry and enthusiastic praise from audiences for his outstanding Mozart interpretation.
He has collaborated with some of today’s most important stage directors—among them Peter Konwitschny, Barrie Kosky, Lydia Steier, Vincent Boussard, and Mariame Clément—and with distinguished conductors including Marek Janowski, Kent Nagano, Christian Thielemann, Sebastian Weigle, Marc Minkowski, Omer Meir Wellber, Daniele Callegari, Speranza Scappucci, Giampaolo Bisanti, Ivan Repušić, Riccardo Minasi, Giacomo Sagripanti, and Georg Fritzsch.
A graduate of the University of Music Würzburg, Chao Deng studied with Cheryl Studer before completing his master’s degree with Christian Elsner and further developing his Lied artistry with Gerold Huber. He trained in the opera studio of the University of Music Weimar under Michail Lanskoi and later earned his Konzertexamen at the University of Music Dresden with Matthias Henneberg.
He is a prizewinner of several international competitions, including the Chamber Opera Schloss Rheinsberg International Singing Competition and the Opera Singing Prize of the Concerto Foundation Germany, and he was awarded a scholarship by the Richard Wagner Association for the Bayreuth Festival.
